शिव मूल रूप से कैलास पर्वत से हैं और देवी पार्वती (आदिशक्ति) उनकी पत्नी हैं | जबकि श्री गणेश और कार्तिकेय उनके पुत्र माने जाते हैं।

उन्हें महादेव के नाम से भी जाना जाता है।

शिव का रंग कपूर के समान सफेद है, इसलिए उन्हें 'कर्पूरगौर' भी कहा जाता है।

शिव को गंगाधर के रूप में भी जाना जाता है, क्योंकि महादेव की जटा से गंगा बहती है, तथा शिवजी माथे पर चंद्रमा धारण करते हैं। शिव द्वारा वासुकी नाग को धारण करने के कारण शिवजी को नागेंद्र भी कहा जाता है।

भौंहों के बीच और भौं के ठीक ऊपर शिवजी के माथे पर तीसरी आंख है।
